Zoom is a useful app that allows people to communicate with each other in a virtual setting. It has become increasingly popular over the last few years and is widely used by both businesses and individuals alike. With Zoom, you can host video conferences with multiple participants at once, share your screen, record meetings, and webinars, and even use breakout rooms for smaller group discussions. It’s easy to use and free for up to 100 participants, making it ideal for online classes or large meeting events. You can also use Zoom on mobile devices such as phones or tablets so you don’t have to worry about being restricted to a laptop or desktop computer.
How to start meeting recording in Zoom?
When your meeting has begun, click “Record” at the bottom of the Zoom meeting window to begin recording. If cloud recording is enabled, a pop-up window inquiring where you want to record will show up: “Record to the cloud” or “Record on this computer”. When recording has started, a red light with the words “Recording” will show in the upper left corner of your Zoom window.
“Record to the cloud”
The Zoom cloud is where your cloud recordings are kept. You may password-protect, share, and download them through the Zoom web portal’s Recording tab. Subscribers to the premium Zoom Pro, Business, Education, and Enterprise plans have access to this capability, which is by default disabled. Zoom also allows the ability to record in the cloud from a mobile device, Zoom Room, and a PC.
Recording features on Zoom
- Providing consent. Participants are prompted for permission to be recorded when they join a meeting that is already being recorded or when the host starts recording. Administrators can modify this consent message to only apply to external meeting participants or to all meeting attendees, internal and external alike, depending on the account. This message can also be customized with further details and a link, such as one to a privacy policy.
- Recording layouts. There are a few layouts that meeting participants can turn while taking a video meeting. The active speaker view will only display the video of the active speaker. The gallery view will show a grid of videos from the attendees. In the gallery view recording, a maximum of 25 people can be seen. The shared window layout lets participants see black bars on the right and left of the window in the recording if the window you shared doesn’t occupy the entire screen. If you choose to share the window when the active speaker thumbnail or gallery view is enabled, participants’ videos will still be visible in the top-right corner.
- Cloud recording editing. You can trim a cloud recording when watching it to choose the playback window and cut out any extraneous material. The original recording file will be overwritten by the trimmed version, which will be applied to all connected files (audio and transcripts). After cutting, the original recording can always be played back. It is not possible to trim the individual audio files for each participant or the messages sent through in-meeting chat.
How to start meeting transcription in Zoom?
The audio of a meeting or webinar that you record to the cloud is automatically transcribed using the audio transcription. When this transcript has been processed, it will show up in the list of meetings that have been recorded as a distinct VTT file. Additionally, you have the choice to close the captions on the movie and display the transcript text within it instead. You have the option to allow or disallow users to access the transcript when sharing a cloud recording. Each segment of the transcript has a timestamp that indicates when in the recording that particular section of the text was recorded. You can alter the text to better reflect the words used or add capitalization and punctuation that the transcript missed.
